Scenarios run through my head of what Miller could do if he were here right now, and not one of them is PG-rated. His solemn face fills my phone screen, and I wish he was here too. The guy who’s more to me than a brother, a friend, or even a teammate. If he was anyone else, I’d cut my losses.īut this is Shane Miller-the guy who makes everything better just by existing in my universe. Only, now that I’m here, he’s avoiding me every chance he gets. I move across the country to chase a dream that’s a decade old. When I’m offered a position on his team in Chicago, I don’t hesitate. Years ago, Miller and I made a pact that we’d win a Super Bowl together. The torch I had for him burns brighter after so long apart, and there’s nothing I can do about it. The media storm would be enough to break both our careers. Now he wants everything to be like it was in college, but we can’t have threesomes and be reckless like we once were. I focused my heartache into making my own NFL dreams come true, and by the time I was drafted, the longing I had for my best friend was buried deep. When Talon left to play pro ball six years ago, the hole in my chest confused me. Tightly framed by set designer Bob Crowley’s backdrop of a beautiful if untouchable Manhattan, the impressionistic narrative unfolds in full view of those spectators allowed to sit on two sides of the stage. It’s all in the voice, the voice, the voice, and it’s beautifully done. Linney slips effortlessly from the harridan mother to the wounded daughter, strong characters both, dispensing with the usual folderol of switching off costume pieces or twisting herself into physical contortions. In this case, it’s the daughter who lies on the hospital bed and the long-estranged mother who comes to visit. Here, the situation is not the expected one between a mother on her deathbed and a daughter struggling to affirm the nature of their relationship before their inevitable final parting. Like the spare but elegant novel by Elizabeth Strout (“Olive Kitteridge”), on which Rona Munro (“The James Trilogy”) based this theatrical treatment, the dynamic is the elementary, fraught relationship between mothers and daughters. Actors often speak of “inhabiting” a role here, the devotion feels reciprocal. The feeling is obviously mutual, because the character of Lucy Barton returns the actor’s commitment with a quiet but searing fidelity to her visionary performance. Just watch the radiant expression on her face as she wraps her arms around the character of Lucy Barton, a role she played in two separate engagements at the Bridge Theater in London, and is now reprising on Broadway in “ My Name is Lucy Barton.” He rapped again – this time more insistently. Barely controlling his impatience, he rapped once on the paneled door of the inner office. This was the third time he had attempted to see her. Madam Chambers couldn’t have stood him up again. He brushed the soot off of his shoulders and scowled at the deserted receptionist’s desk. It had been inconvenient to leave the Minister’s budget meeting to sign the lease for his new flat, but it would be an even bigger inconvenience to not have a place of his own the first of next month. Percy stepped out of the Floo at the estate agent’s office with one minute to spare. Summary: Percy Weasley wants the flat in the Inglenook Building. Apparently, it took thousands of words for Percy to fall in love with Audrey! This is my Secret Santa Story for kinderjedi who asked for a story describing how Percy fell in love with Audrey. We also get more Ino background, hell yes. Then my boy Inosuke comes in to help and things get even better. It's bitter and tough to watch but also great. Then we switch over to Doma and his fight with Kanao. On top of that we get Akaza background, and as much as we hate him at this point, his background sure adds so many layers to make him a better character. This volume starts off amazing with Tanjiro and Giyu putting up a hell of a fight against Akaza and boy oh boy do both struggle and play off some awesome moves. Original Review: Happy for this to be my 700th review of the year, since Demon Slayer is probably the best manga I've read all year along with Spy X Family. Sad, wonderful, and really gets you to know all the characters as they fight for survival. Re-read 2023: Well, still as fantastic and well written as before. Jamison describes her time working as a medical actor: someone who pretends to be sick with a particular condition, with a particular list of symptoms and a specific background history (married or divorced, kids or no, dead brother, good job, etc). The book kicks off with the titular essay “The Empathy Exams”, which chronicles the author’s involvement in a fascinating but faintly disturbing exercise. Not every essay is equally riveting, but there are certainly moments so naked as to make some readers squirm, and it’s a powerful collection overall. It’s a strong collection, marked by intellectual restlessness, a knack for the arresting phrase, and an almost alarming honesty. Her debut collection of essays, The Empathy Exams, touches upon recurring themes of illness and pain, and our responses to the same. As with all good essays, her subjects tend to begin tightly focused but then spiral outward to include topics and questions that might not appear immediately relevant. Leslie Jamison is a novelist and essayist, and this book of diverse essays features work originally published in such outlets as Harper’s, Believer and Tin House. Cogheart Adventures Series (Vol 1-4) 4 Books Collection Set by Peter Bunzl Whether you have celiac disease or are just very sensitive to gluten, her story will speak to you. But here it is, a book that tells the truth about the real-life hurdles many people face trying to adopt a gluten free lifestyle. And once upon a time, she never thought she'd write a book that would find humor in her gastrointestinal malfunctions, her abdominal pain, her bloating, her foggy brain, and her chronic fatigue. When Delise Dickard was a little girl she began her first story: "Once upon a time." She never imagined then that the main character in her first published book would be a protein composite called "gluten." She never imagined her journey would bring her to interview world-renowned, scientific experts on the human gut. Written with wry humor, and poignant prose, this is a unique memoir - one of the first ever written from the perspective of someone suffering from non-celiac gluten sensitivity. |
